The Newark Street Community Garden Association (NSCGA) was established in 1974 by local resident Anne Chase as a part of National Food Day. We are guests of the government of the District of Columbia’s Department of Parks and Recreation.

The NSCGA Members participate in wider community projects such as helping new community gardens to organize, provide tours and a garden plot for children and we deliver excess produce from our gardens to local food banks. Our membership comes from across 8 zip codes in the District and includes diversity of ethnic origins.

We enjoy a four-acre site which is shared with a children’s playground, tennis courts, picnic areas and an open green space used by our neighbors for Yoga, frisbee, baseball, soccer and sunbathing. With the backdrop of the National Cathedral, local artists use the space to paint and photograph scenes inspired by the garden.

Thanks to generous grants from the Casey Tree Foundation 60 new trees have been planted at the park. A third phase of tree planting slated for spring 2009 will complete the project NSCGA began in 2007 to restore the tree canopy to the Newark Street Park and to provide the community with a delightful oasis where residents can rest, play and re-energize.  The Newark Street Community Garden Association is certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat. We hope you will visit and enjoy the park.
