Welcome to the new website for the Newark Street Community Garden Association (NSCGA)!

October 25, 2010
Dear NSCGA Members
Linda and I would like to thank all of the NSCGA members who have been so supportive during the time that we were president and vice president of the NSCGA. We appreciate and were really touched by the confidence expressed by the many members who wanted us to continue with Linda as president. Those of you who have been in the Association for a number of years, know Linda was president in the early 1990′s and we thought we would retire from the official duties of the Board and just enjoy gardening as civilians.

So many things have been accomplished with the help of so many in our garden community and serving all of you has been rewarding. We hope that more members will consider volunteering. A community garden works best when all the members participate and contribute their talents and time. To name all of the members who have contributed and made the NSCGA the success it is, would require a very long list of past and current members. So, to all of you, thank you. Nothing could have been accomplished without your kind words and deeds.

Our donations of surplus produce from our gardens was hugely successful thanks to Marcia Stein, our outgoing Special Projects coordinator. Our food donations to S.O.M.E. and DASH were received with open arms and grateful hearts. We also maintain a garden plot dedicated to Miriam’s Kitchen and our NSCGA member Elwood Gautier has delivered every week to them during the growing season. Susan Akman, coordinator for the Children’s Program at the NSCGA has done a remarkable job for the toddlers in our community. The parents have expressed their thanks to our garden community and especially to Susan, for continued support for this program.

Our end-of-the-year picnic and Ethnic Food Tasting was fun and delicious beyond all words. You had to be there to experience the wonderful African treats that Yao Afantchao, DC Extension Service Agent, provided for us. Thank you Yao, for all your advice and for being a wonderful addition to our garden community.

The weather was spectacular for our gathering, which was a reminder how fortunate we are to have such a lovely space to garden, in the heart of the City.

The NSCGA Board of Directors 2011 Garden Season are:

Anatol Steck, President - newarkstcommunitygarden@gmail.com
Steve Gordon, Membership
Elke Matthaeus, Rules
Amelia Showalter, Agriculture
Jon Mormino, Garden Services
Irene Preston, Social Services
Martha Baron Kaufman, Special Projects

Many thanks and best wishes for a peaceful and healthy winter.

Hope springs eternal

Dear Neighbors:
This year the NSCGA had an unprecedented number of applicants requesting garden plots (80). We typically only hold approximately 50 applicants on our wait list each year. That is the average number of plots that become available each garden season.
We have assigned 50+ garden plots this season and we are re opening the wait list starting September 15, 2010.
Applications are for the WAIT LIST ONLY
Applications can be downloaded from our web site www.newarkstcommunitygarden.org or hard copies are available in the mail box immediately next to this bulletin board.
Garden plots are assigned on a first applied, first assigned basis. As soon as a plot becomes available we will contact you. Please make sure your contact information is up to date. Information about the Newark Street Community Garden Association is available on our web site.
If you have applied for membership previously, you are still on our waiting list.
Please do not reapply
Your name will be carried over to the 2011 garden season and a plot will be assigned in the order that we received your application. We will make every attempt possible to assign a garden plot to those currently on the waiting list as soon as a plot becomes available.
Thank you for your interest in the Newark Street Community Garden Association.

As you can see from my onion plant, the bees are at work in the Newark Street Community Garden!
